Gentle Forward Movement

Balanced health is yours for the taking.

Live the life you dream of by harnessing the power of the natural
elements to achieve deep happiness – in your body, mind, and soul.

It is possible.

Live your life and achieve success through gentle forward movement.

Learning that how I am is exactly right and valuable without needing to change or fix anything to be different led me to a different specialty in the law (that suits my disposition perfectly!) and to the wellness profession where I now have the honor of sharing Ayurveda, Yoga, and Reiki with people locally and across the globe.

Ayurvedic Health Counseling

Ayurveda is an ancient system of healing

that, in the west, focuses on individualized diet and lifestyle practices that create balance and harmony.

At Sunshine Studios of the Finger Lakes, I bring the simple solutions of Ayurveda to my clients. I counsel clients to support their health and wellness journey with customized recommendations and daily self-care practices.

Ayurvedic Health Counseling focuses on the complete you. We will start with a deep dive into what makes you You, both the healthy parts and the stuck parts. As an AHC, I don’t treat disease. I cultivate health.

As stand-alone support or complementing your Ayurvedic program I also offer Reiki sessions and private Yoga sessions – ask me how Yoga and Reiki can support you in experiencing better health and wellness.

Find out how Ayurveda can support you in gentle forward movement toward your health goals.

I teach as I believe:

We need gentle forward movement – even in our most passionate ventures – to achieve our goals. Everything I do is infused with this ethic to the best of my abilities.

From my gentle glasses to my more challenging mixed-level classes, I provide gentle guidance to help you find the experience you are looking for and the space and quiet to explore that experience.

Reiki Sessions
Reiki is the Japanese healing art of using universal life energy to heal the body, mind, and soul. It is a gentle, non-invasive, and non-manipulative form of healing and restoration. Reiki practice is balancing to the individual and thus supports self-healing. During a Reiki session, you will be fully clothed. I use a light touch (or no touch, if you prefer). You will be lying comfortably on a heated-optional treatment table in a calming environment.

Reiki is the perfect complement to Ayurveda.

The Ki in Reiki is the life force energy also known as chi or prana. Reiki supports the balancing that is inherent in all Ayurvedic goals and enhances the body’s ability to do what it’s designed to do – heal itself – by delivering calm, restorative energy to the whole person, instead of just masking a symptom. Encouraging Ki (chi, prana) to move is a key component to the body’s ability to heal itself.

Welcome to Sunshine Studios

I opened Sunshine Studios of the Finger Lakes to bring the simple and ancient solutions of Ayurveda, Yoga and Reiki to my community and as far and wide as I can reach.

Hi, I’m Susan James

Board Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor, Yoga Teacher (RYT 200)  & Reiki Master

Ayurveda saved me. It gave me health, a work life I finally feel connected to and passionate about, a marriage worthy of all my romantic dreams. Ayurveda did this by explaining me to me. Even before I understood the value of the daily practices, Ayurveda gave definition and meaning to the strange and non-linear (I thought) way my mind operated and the confusing and uncooperative (I thought) way my body worked.

The moment I heard about kapha dosha being a natural way a person can be constituted (a little rounder and softer by design), I was immediately freed from years of struggling with diets and diet mentality and self-criticism because I was never able to achieve the sinewy and lithe body of the movie stars.

The moment I heard about the vata dosha that makes people naturally enthusiastic and energetic, changeable and wildly interested in everything, I immediately let go of the guilt and self-condemnation of not being a steady and consistent producer–one career with longevity, for instance.

Learning that how I am is exactly right and valuable without needing to change or fix anything to be different led me to a different specialty in the law (that suits my disposition perfectly!) and to the wellness profession where I now have the honor of sharing Ayurveda, Yoga and Reiki with people to support their own healing.

From a couple who wanted support with diet-related health concerns….

“My husband and I are both clients and we have been thrilled with our experiences. Susan demonstrates self-confidence and knowledge at the level of someone who has been practicing Ayurveda for many years. She listens intently, asks good questions, and partners with you to fashion the best recommendations possible. Each of us is beginning to see and feel changes. And her warmth and love of Ayurveda is obvious. She brings passion to her consultations. We both highly recommend Susan to anyone who is tired of the “same old” approaches to health and willing to try something fresh and powerful.”

From a client dealing with the physical effects of long-term grief….

“A while ago, I experienced great loss. Whether it be divorce, loss of a loved one, or coping with an illness, we all struggle with the aftermath. My recent session with Susan James was as inspirational as it was illuminating. At the very onset of our session, I felt at peace.  She asked thoughtful questions. She listened deeply as I talked.  Conversation was effortless.  It felt natural and right. It felt like sitting in a big, comfortable chair. I walked away with a deeper understanding of the impact that nutrition plays on healing and that being kind to my body and mind are within my control. Simple, powerful and deeply inspirational.  Loved it.”

From a client needing support with the intensity of full-time elder care….

“This past year has been so challenging on a global, national and local level.  When you add personal challenges to the mix, it’s easy to see why so many of us are looking for clarity, comfort and a cerebral means to cope.  Look no further than Sunshine Studios.  I have found the services at Sunshine Studios to be the perfect antidote to the uber-ness of today.  Susan‘s knowledge, wisdom, and warmth have become an essential component to my life.”

From a client needing support with health changes….

“I have always had a conscious disconnect between knowing what to do to be healthier and actually doing what I need to do to be healthier. Susan’s Ayurvedic Counseling and intuitive nature have helped bridge that gap and start me on a path to the truth of real health and wellness.”

Are you a doctor?
No, I am not a doctor. I am a board certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor and as such, I work with diet, lifestyle, and herbs, to offer you support for your physical, mental, and emotional health. If you’re on this site, your doctor may have told you to eat better and get some exercise. That may be all the guidance you’ve received. As an AHC, I can tell you how to eat better and what exercise is right for you, and we can tackle the all-important question of how to make yourself do all the right things for your health.

I am also a Reiki Practitioner. I perform Reiki, which helps the body relax into its own natural healing.

Will you work with my disease?
Yes and no. As an Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Reiki Practitioner, I do not treat disease. My work focuses on supporting you in all your health goals through diet and lifestyle changes that will enhance your ability to concentrate on the disease healing you are doing with your health care practitioner.

There isn’t any disease that wouldn’t benefit from better eating and more balanced living. That’s where I come in. That is not a one-size fits all. Every person needs a different approach. That approach will change depending on your time of life, your current health, the season. Balanced living needs to be on our daily to do list. I can help you put the right strategies for your personal wellness onto that list.

Is Ayurveda a Religion?
No. Ayurveda is a science. Ayurveda is literally translated as “Science of Life.” Ayurveda originated in India 5,000 years ago. Interestingly, even that many years ago, people were struggling with obesity and high blood pressure and high stress. Almost all the issues were the same then as they are now. Luckily, the elements of space, air, fire, water, and earth are the same too. There is always more balance to be had.

When Ayurvedic healing principles were first written down 2,500 years ago, the definition of a healthy person included all aspects of the person. This is the same definition we work with today: “One who is established in the Self, with balanced doshas (our essential nature), balanced digestive fire, properly formed tissues, proper elimination of waste products, well-functioning bodily processes, and whose mind, soul, and senses are filled with bliss is called a healthy person.”

Do you do online consultations?
Yes. I am happy to do Ayurvedic consultations over Skype, Zoom, or via the telephone, whichever is easiest for you.
